Workers were on a job site at 41 Foundry Avenue when they found the 12 potentially explosive cannonballs, Massachusetts State Police said. The unexploded ordinances were found inside a pipe that workers uncovered.

The Waltham Police and Fire Departments responded, as did members of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, the Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, and an ATF agent all showed up to deal with the problem.

They X-rayed the cannonballs to make sure they were safe to move before officers and agents collected them and drove them to a secluded area to be detonated safely, authorities said.
